News Release: Michigan Catholic Conference Statement on Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Veto

(LANSING)—The following statement was released by Michigan Catholic Conference Vice President for Public Policy Paul A. Long after Governor Jennifer Granholm vetoed Senate Bill 776, legislation banning partial-birth abortion in Michigan:

“Considering similar federal legislation has been held constitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court, the Governor’s veto exhibits a continued indifference toward and deliberate lack of respect for the preciousness of human life. Regardless of how SB 776 reached her desk, the Governor had the opportunity to rise above internal legislative quarrels and sign a bill that provides maximum protection for those facing a most horrific fate. Despite this veto, the vibrant and bipartisan pro-life community in Michigan will continue to fight relentlessly for the dignity of women and the human rights of the unborn as those who cling to baseless policy slogans become more isolated.”
