(Lansing)—Michigan Catholic Conference has released a brief video message from Policy Advocate Rebecca Mastee speaking to House Bill 5711, the “omnibus” abortion bill that is slated for House passage, possibly in the coming hours. In the video, Mastee addresses the measures included in the bill and dispels frequently cited myths about the legislation.

According to Ms. Mastee’s video message: “Although this bill is multifaceted, what it will accomplish is not novel, it simply contains common sense measures to hold the abortion industry accountable, and more importantly, to help protect the health and safety of women. Considering that only 4 of the 32 abortion clinics in Michigan are licensed, which abortion advocates recognize, don’t women in Michigan deserve better?”

Regarding myths perpetuated about the legislation, Ms. Mastee states: “This bill is merely a compilation of bills that were previously introduced, some as far back as January of 2011, a year and a half ago. Many provisions that are included in this legislation have already been discussed and voted on separately, both in the House of Representatives and the State Senate. So to say this legislation is being rushed, is either a manufactured complaint, or simply a failure to follow the legislative process.

“Others have erroneously stated that this legislation is a politically motivated attack on women. However legislators were informed of egregious abortion industry practices back in March. Should they simply sit idle while verifiable reports of dirty and unlicensed facilities circulate? No, because women deserve better.”

Michigan Catholic Conference is the official public policy voice of the Catholic Church in this state.
